The Moroccan government has stated that it has selected six projects led by five national and international companies to launch green hydrogen projects in the Sahara Desert in the southern province, aiming to produce ammonia, industrial fuels and steel, with a total investment of up to 32.5 billion US dollars.

The companies selected by the "Moroccan Offer" committee are:
The ORNX consortium, composed of Ortus from the United States, Acciona from Spain and Nordex from Germany, will collaborate to produce green ammonia.
The consortium of Taqa from the United Arab Emirates and CESPA from Spain will produce green ammonia and industrial fuel.
Nareva in Morocco will produce green ammonia, industrial fuel and green steel.
ACWA Power in Saudi Arabia will produce steel.
China United Energy (0467.HK) and China Three Gorges Corporation will produce green ammonia.
These projects follow two earlier agreements signed between Morocco and France in October 2024. The first agreement cooperation Morocco has the overall capacity, while the second agreement establishes cooperation between OCP and Engie, which includes five projects, among which there is one project focused on green hydrogen.
The head of the government office said that after signing the relevant agreements with the aforementioned companies, Morocco will provide up to 30,000 hectares of land for each project.
The government hopes to help achieve domestic energy goals and increase energy exports to the EU by producing green hydrogen - after the EU announced a green deal to reduce carbon emissions, it is expected to import 10 million tons of renewable hydrogen by 2030.
Morocco hopes that renewable energy will account for 52% of its installed power generation capacity by 2030, up from 45% today.
