I. Three major breakthroughs: High integration, high energy ratio, and high security

After more than a year of research and development, GAC Hydrogen fuel cell stacks have overcome a series of challenges, including the design and preparation of integrated single-cell and integrated box seal technical solutions, achieving technological breakthroughs in high-power fuel cell metal plate stacks in areas such as airtightness and safety.

  • High integration: Integrated design empowers modular applications

The hydrogen fuel cell stack of GAC adopts the integrated single cell and integrated box seal technology, achieving a highly integrated and modular design. This innovative design reduces the stack volume by 30% and the weight by 25%. It not only effectively enhances the vehicle's space utilization and load capacity, but also provides the possibility to adapt to various vehicle platforms.

  • High energy ratio: Collaborative innovation of ultra-thin metal plates and high-performance membrane electrodes

By adopting ultra-thin metal plates and high-performance membrane electrode technology, the power density of the stack has exceeded 7kW/L, reaching the leading level in the industry. Ultra-thin metal plates not only enhance the power output of the stack but also effectively reduce material costs and volume weight. High-performance membrane electrodes ensure the efficient progress of electrochemical reactions, enhancing the overall performance and energy conversion efficiency of the stack. This combination of technologies enables the stack to release more powerful force within a limited space, meeting the energy demands under different working conditions and providing a solid guarantee for the vehicle's long range.

  • High security: Multiple protection systems build security guarantees

The stack is equipped with active and passive hydrogen exhaust systems, enhanced electrical isolation design and anti-vibration and shock structure, establishing a comprehensive safety protection system. The active and passive hydrogen exhaust system can effectively monitor and promptly discharge leaked hydrogen, ensuring safety during the usage process. Strengthening electrical isolation design can effectively prevent potential safety hazards caused by electrical faults. The anti-vibration and shock structure ensures the stable operation of the stack in complex road conditions and harsh environments. In addition, the stack also meets the requirements of low-temperature start-up at -30℃, IP67 protection level, and has passed the accelerated aging test, fully verifying its reliability and durability under extreme conditions, ensuring the safety of users' travel.

Second, from passenger vehicles to commercial vehicles, empower a green future across the board

Since 2008, GAC Group has been laying out in the hydrogen energy field. After years of innovative practice, it has mastered dual technical routes of hydrogen fuel cells and hydrogen engines, providing multi-path support for achieving the "carbon neutrality" goal.

In the field of passenger vehicles, in 2018, GAC's independently developed high-power Fuel Cell system and on-board hydrogen storage system were successfully equipped on GAC's pure electric platform, launching the first hydrogen fuel cell SUV in China - AION LX Fuel Cell. It passed the certification of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology in 2020 and began demonstration operation in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area in October 2021. In 2021, the first 1.5L hydrogen engine independently developed by GAC was successfully ignited. After three years of continuous technological iteration, the latest generation 2.0L hydrogen engine has reached the industry-leading level in terms of thermal efficiency and specific power. In 2023, the Julang - Hydrogen Hybrid System, composed of a 2.0L hydrogen engine and the GMC 2.0 electromechanical coupling system, was successfully installed on the flagship model of GAC, the GAC Trumpchi E9, making it the world's first passenger car to be equipped with a hydrogen-electric hybrid system. Starting from November 2024, the hydrogen-hybrid version of GAC Trumpchi E9 has been conducting demonstration operations in Tianjin. The demonstration operation scenarios cover commuting within the park and short-distance shuttling, etc. The single hydrogen refueling time is only 3.5 minutes, which is comparable to the refueling time of traditional fuel vehicles.

In the commercial vehicle sector, GAC Group has also demonstrated strong technological expansion capabilities and innovative application strength. Stack technology can be extended to hydrogen fuel cell heavy-duty trucks and megawatt-level power generation systems, providing key core technical support for building a green transportation ecosystem. In December 2023, GAC Hino released the first hydrogen fuel cell commercial vehicle in Guangzhou and signed a strategic cooperation agreement with Yuanshang Co., Ltd. for 1,000 hydrogen energy logistics vehicles. The first batch of 50 hydrogen fuel cell van-type transport vehicles will be delivered in September 2024. These vehicles have demonstrated advantages of high efficiency, environmental friendliness and economy in actual operation. It provides a referenceable example for the green transformation of the logistics industry and continuously promotes the innovative application of hydrogen energy technology in the commercial vehicle sector.
